I discussed when it makes sense to buy points/miles in a previous email. TL;DR: Compare the flight cash rates with award rates x cents paid per point. If cash rates are higher, you got yourself a no-brainer discount.

Getting more than 1.48 cents in value with Virgin shouldn't be difficult, and there’s a 14-day cancel/refund policy if you haven’t used the points.

Easy routes that come to mind are ANA first class and US to UK in econ/business. Delta One could still be a good option, but Virgin redemptions on Delta were just devalued without notice so double-check the math.
